THE 1ST LAW ENFORCEMENT BATTALION
- The 1st LEB traces its lineage to the 1st Military Police Battalion, activated during various periods between 1944 and 1971.
- In the summer of 2012, the USMC created its first law enforcement battalions - a lean, specialized force of military police officers that it hopes can quickly deploy worldwide to help investigate crimes from terrorism to drug trafficking and train fledgling security forces in allied nations.
- The idea behind the law enforcement battalions is to consolidate the military police and capitalize on their investigative skills.
- The battalion will be capable of helping control civil disturbances, handling detainees, carrying out forensic work, and using biometrics to identify suspects. They also could assist local authorities in allied countries in securing crime scenes and building cases.
- The 1stLEB numbers approximately 540 Marines, of whom 25% are deployed overseas at any given time.
